    When to come

    Season by season in Queenstown

    Summer (Dec–Feb)

    Peak & busy

20–28°C, dry, book everything in advance.

    Autumn (Mar–May)

    The peak of the peak

Arrowtown's poplars turn gold — the annual Autumn Festival in April sells out.

    Winter (Jun–Aug)

    Ski season

-2 to 8°C, snow chains often required, resorts (Coronet, Remarkables) open.

    Spring (Sep–Nov)

    Shoulder & wild

Rapid weather change, blossom in Cromwell, rivers running high.

    Before you go

    Trip essentials

    • Milford Sound: no fuel past Te Anau (120 km each way). Fuel up before you leave.
    • Milford Road can close for avalanche control in winter — check NZTA before you drive.
    • The Crown Range should not be attempted in a big van during snow — use SH6 through Cromwell.
    • Queenstown is expensive — cook in the van and use Frankton Pak'nSave instead of central cafes.

    Fuel & food

    Supermarkets & fuel

    • Pak'nSave Frankton (huge, cheapest in town)
    • Countdown Frankton and Fresh Choice Alpine Retreat
    • Fuel is meaningfully cheaper in Cromwell (45 min east) than Queenstown

Full 4G/5G in Queenstown, Arrowtown and Wānaka. Long dead zones on Milford Road and the road to Glenorchy.

    Queenstown tips most visitors miss

Fergburger queue too long? Devil Burger and Ferg's Bakery next door are excellent alternatives.

The free public sauna and swim at Onsen (kidding — that's paid). The free option is the Wakatipu Basin's cold-water skinny dip at Bob's Cove.

Skippers Canyon Road is spectacular but not permitted in most rental vans — leave it for a booked tour.

    Real questions, real answers

    Frequently asked

Can I sleep in a van in Queenstown for free?

Only in a certified self-contained van, and only at designated sites. Council enforces heavily.

Is Milford doable as a day trip?

Yes but long — 4 hours each way, plus 2 hours cruise. Overnighting in Te Anau makes it much more enjoyable.

Do I need chains for winter?

On the Crown Range and Milford Road, often yes. We supply and fit them if you ask.

Where can I freedom camp near Queenstown?

The town centre is a no-camp zone, but the surrounding Central Otago district has multiple designated sites. CamperMate and the QLDC map show current, legal spots.
