Vans over 3.5 t are not permitted in most Auckland CBD bus lanes; all our vans are under that limit.

Freedom camping rules

Auckland is one of the strictest freedom-camping regions in the country. Only certified self-contained vehicles may freedom camp, and only at designated sites.

Council rules

Auckland Council (Freedom Camping in Vehicles Bylaw)

You must be in a certified self-contained vehicle (green sticker) at almost every free site inside the region.
Camping is prohibited on most beaches, reserves and residential streets — infringements are $200+.
Designated sites include Duders Regional Park, Tāpapakanga Regional Park and a handful of council-managed carparks. Check Auckland Council's freedom camping map before you park.

A Waka Kotahi (NZTA) toll applies on the Northern Gateway (SH1 north of Ōrewa) — you can pay online within 5 days.

Auckland tips most visitors miss

Piha and Karekare beaches on the west coast are stunning but the drives are steep and winding — take them slowly in a van.

The Coromandel 309 Road is a scenic shortcut but is unsealed for 21 km. Take SH25 instead unless you're confident.

Water on the Coromandel can be scarce in summer — fill your tank before you leave Auckland.
